Current Value Estimate 1984 Ocean Alexander 43 Flush Aft Deck

NOTE: this is a sight, unseen online appraisal - a more accurate survey can be done when all systems are powered up, a sea trial is conducted, and out-of-water inspection available.

EXTERIOR the boat has been sitting for three years without being washed. The teak decks looked to have been pressure-washed as do the handrails so the teak pith is bad. Foredeck is loose, screws exposed, areas where almost through to the deck. Need to be removed.

The aft cockpit decks are moldy and not in the best condition, but look like they could be saved.

Windows laminations are failing and foggy around edges with one cracked. The entry door slides well but like everything wood needs refinishing.

The aft cabin portlights have trim cracked and weathered as are most ports. Navigation lights are not confirmed; all electronics have been taken out and probably not worth trying to reinstall.

Moisture meter on foredeck shows dry in many spots and moist in some, front cabin top is pretty much dry, as is the bridge and most of the cockpit deck. Didn’t send a lot of time going over every inch.

The boat took a hit on the starboard side, has a pretty good scrape in the hull, broke a section of the cap rail, and damaged the SS handrail – not sure if bent… also not sure if the SS rub rail is existing or needs to be found.

Horns and antennas look used… not sure about antenna, didn’t check any 12V.

Gauges show signs of water intrusion on the instrument panel – the plastic cover is broken and wasn’t in place, so it could be an issue. The hydraulic steering has been disconnected, but told it is ready to reinstall.

There is a homemade dinghy davit that is falling apart.

SALON work has been done in the engine room,so the salon is a mess… the wrap around bench seating has been taken apart to open hatches, someone spilled whatever on the starboard seating and ruined the cushion.

The woodwork around the windows has damage, and the whole cabin needs a thorough cleaning. The varnish is well used/abused but not in horrible condition.

The parquet floor needs refinishing, the headliner is in good shape, I think the lighting works… overall, what I have seen of the wiring is well marked and not too owner updated. Has a telephone system that’s goofy; the electronics other than the ICOM VHF need to be replaced.

The mini blinds appear to be OK – didn’t remove the black plastic from the windows, so not sure what’s under.

Washer/dryer and additional cooler not tested.

AFT CABIN The deck in the aft cabin feels solid, other than where there’s a hatch starboard, not a big deal but needs new support.

All the portlights have cracks and signs of water intrusion. They are PYHI, which have been discontinued so larger ports would be needed to replace.

The lamination on the shelves and in spots of the counters has failed. Some white powder by an outlet – not sure what it is. The headliner is nice but again could not test 12V lighting.

Shower show some leaking from somewhere, the shower wall is cracked, the head is hand pump and goes forward to a holding tank of unknown volume. Can’t test water system.

GALLEY is quite nice. Cupboards appear OK, has a propane stove. NOTE: also has a 110V/propane refrigerator – scary to me. Nothing was tested, but it seems we had some issues finding lights, etc.

There is a doorway to the engine room and generator.

FORWARD CABIN Needs a thorough cleaning. There is a hole cut in to the wall – looks like something for the refrigerator.

A V-berth layout with cushions in decent condition. A fairly large closet, but no hanging locker. The woodwork shows signs of delamination typical of high humidity. Doesn’t appear to have any major leaks and again portlight issues.

The forward head is entered from the galley, and the wall in this is cracked, and there is a cracked wall in the shower as well. Hand pump toilet.

MECHANICALS 2 x Lehman 135 w/5500hrs (could be 120’s) and a Westerbeke 8kW (I think). Batteries are temporary, so will need new.

Has a battery charger and inverter, not sure of their status – inverter is old. Has a MarineAire system, not sure if functional.

There is only 30A shore power.

NOTE 1: Port fuel tank had water in it – this is why the side vents have been removed. Tank is being looked at – hopefully only a pinhole situation on the top… to be determined.

NOTE 2: One of the transmissions has a bit of a whine at certain RPM.

Bottom condition not known…

CONCLUSION the Ocean Alexander 43 is a well-made boat, and this one has gone through some abuse. There is no possible way of bringing any of the brightwork back; the handrails are thin with deep mold growth in spots. The foredeck is trashed, with the aft not far behind. A lot of things need to be reinstalled, from doors to replacing lights, if parts can be found.

None of the Isinglass is usable, nor window covers. Not sure if the bimini is usable, odds aren’t good. The salon glass is delaminating and most portlights unusable. The woodwork throughout needs refinishing and areas show water damage. At least the headliners look good.

No electronics of value, nor are battery charging or inverters… all questionable. There is an old dinghy – whether it is serviceable is unknown.

A good washing would do wonders, but that won’t help the areas needing repair, which is a lot.
